Query on Burne-Jones

We have received the following query:

I wonder if you can help me. I am trying to find where the account books of Burne-Jones are located. I am involved in church recording for NADFAS and we are at present recording five of his windows, for which a look at his account books would be a great help.

Please comment below if you can help.

EBJ’s account books are in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. [When Alan Crawford spoke to the Society in 2003 on “Burne-Jones, Stained Glass and Laughter” he used Burne-Jones’s account books to explore the development of his work in stained glass and “… something you don’t expect to find in account books, his eloquent, hilarious, mock-pathetic sense of humour …”]

  2. The great expert on Morris & Co stained glass is/was A C Sewter, who completed an extensive survey c1875, incorporated into a 2-volume catalogue published by Yale University Press. He often incorporated details from Burne-Jones’s account book and about glass painters where these were known. There is also an index of where cartoons were used.

Oops – the date of Sewter’s survey should of course have been c1975.
